Immunity boosting ways that can help your system

The recent wave of the pandemic has unfolded an unprecedented test of our physical and mental health.

While there is an unparalleled level of research going on to combat and challenge the impact of COVID-19, the new strains and their effects are a cause of concern for about all of us. We are at the mercy of our own immune systems to help fight any possible infection, especially if we are still not vaccinated. Therefore, the onus of fortifying our immune systems against an infection is on each one of us.

The strength of our immune system comes from all the lifestyle choices we make. We know that our gentlemen are thoroughly aligned with their best care and choose healthy nutrient dense diet, enough sleep, recreational exercises and workout. Yet, the growing demand of the world outside for a healthier immunity may use some additional care and attention.

Traditional home remedies, practices that Ministry of AYUSH suggests and studied supplementations might prove to be a buffet of strength for your body:

General immunity strengthening practices:

1. Drink warm water throughout the day.

2. Practice at least 30 minutes of Pranayama, Yogasanas and meditation daily.

3. Drink herbal tea/Kadha made of Tulsi, Cinnamon, Dry Ginger, Black Pepper and Munakka raisins.

Immunity boosters from your kitchen

1. Turmeric:  Turmeric is known as a celebrated ingredient in Ayurveda that can enhance and improve your immunity function. Curcumin present in turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties that may further safeguard your body from going into a panic mode with onset of any disease.

2. Ginger: The spicy herb from our chai, ginger is known for its effect in calming, soothing and curing symptoms like chills and sore throat. While WHO states that it can’t prevent you from getting infected by COVID-19, its anti-inflammatory properties may help reduce inflammations.

3. Tulsi: The jack of all trades potted in most of our balconies, Tulsi is that one savior against most of our immunity stressors. It is known to have immunity boosting and antiviral properties that can help strengthen your system against the working of infections.

4. Garlic: Garlic is known to be one of the most anti-inflammatory and anti-viral ingredients that can enhance the health of your immune system. It stimulates the strength and function of your white blood cells, the defence component of your blood that rushes through it to protect each cell against virus, bacteria and other foreign invaders that have come to threaten your health.

Over-the-counter immunity

Do consult your general physician before using any micronutrient supplementation you might need. They are the best guide to prescribe the dosage and duration of the necessary supplements depending upon any existing illnesses.

1. Vitamin D: Many studies prove Vitamin D’s significance in lowering the risks or intensity of a respiratory tract infection. It may even improve your body’s response to the anti-viral treatment you are taking to deal with the infection. While more research needs to be done to find its preventive benefits in the case of COVID-19, many experts state it to be safe to strengthen your immunity.

2. Zinc: Zinc develops immune cells and helps their communication. It also demonstrates antiviral activity and its deficiency means that the immune system can’t function properly.

3. Vitamin C: Of course, the king of the current times, Vitamin C is known to help immune cells function. It protects them. Supplementing with vitamin C can help reduce the duration or severity of upper respiratory tract infections.

Supplementation through some necessary vitamins and minerals can help your immune response. But it is important to note that WHO remarks that currently there is no guidance on supplementation preventing COVID-19. Micronutrients provided through supplementation are necessary for a well-functioning immune system. But wherever possible, one must try to include natural sources of these micronutrients through a balanced diet.

Disclaimer: The opinions expressed in this article are not suggestive of solutions to cure COVID-19. Our intent to share any measures to improve your immunity is based on scientific journals and recommendations of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and WHO. Please note that strengthening your immunity is not an alternative to the earmarked use of COVID appropriate behaviours like social distancing, masking, or sanitising. So please, please continue being the gentleman you are, and stay at home.
