It’s a matter of great pride that our Indian beauties are scorching ramps all over the world for some of the biggest names in fashion. We are listing the who’s who of homegrown models on international fashion scene, purely as a general knowledge booster for our bros.
1) Laxmi Menon
At 5’ 11’’, this dusky, flawless beauty from Bangalore is not a newbie and has been dominating the global fashion scene for over 7 years now. From Jean Paul Gaultier, Hermes, Chanel, Givenchy, she’s walked the ramp for them all. Claim to fame – Laxmi featured in the 2011 Pirelli Calendar, photographed by Karl Lagerfeld and is the first Indian model to feature in a Pirelli calendar. Just in case you are curious, Menon lives in Goa now.
2) Bhumika Arora
Originally from Haryana, Bhumika’s 5’11’’ height and 22-inch waist was a cause for much laughter in school as were her ‘guy-like’ looks. This lovely lady made her detractors eat humble pie as her exotic looks landed her plum assignments for Roberto Cavalli, Alexander Wang, Vera Wang and Stella McCartney walking runways at Paris, New York, London and Milan Fashion Weeks. We couldn’t find out where she lives now.
3) Moni Kangana Dutta
We know you are thinking you have seen her somewhere. That somewhere includes magazines, TV commercials, Kingfisher calendar and a 2010 movie called Guzaarish, where she played a small part. Apart from being splashed in centrespreads and campaigns, this hot model from Guwahati walked the ramps for top European and American fashion houses and is a dancer too. The good news is she had moved base to Paris for a few years but has settled back in Mumbai now.
4) Ujjwala Raut
While she’s not exactly the young show stopper anymore, you should know her because she is widely acknowledged as India's first successful supermodel. There is not an acclaimed brand in the world that hasn’t used Ujjwala as their face. We can list Yves Saint-Laurent, Roberto Cavalli, Hugo Boss, Cynthia Rowley, Victoria's Secret, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Betsey Johnson, Givenchy, Valentino, Oscar de la Renta, Emilio Pucci, Diane von Furstenberg and many other unpronounceable names. After a bitter separation from her partner, she lives in New York now with her daughter and doing what she does best - modeling.
5) Pooja Mor
An engineering graduate with 5’9’’ height, 24 inch waist and 34 inch hips, Pooja took the best decision when she ditched engineering for modeling. Understandably, this 82% holder in Physics-Chemistry-Mathematics faced stiff parental opposition, but she carried on unfazed. 2015 onwards this young stunner has been seen on world ramps as the face of major international brands. Considering she’s relatively new to the world fashion scene, you might find it difficult to pin her down, at least not in the near future.
6) Neelam Gill
We close this hot list with the British model of Indian origin Neelam Gill. The first Indian model to be featured in a Burberry campaign, Neelam soon started working for names like Abercrombie & Fitch and Dior; and became a Vogue regular. With her family origins in Punjab, this British-Indian model caught everyone’s fancy when she donned a traditional Indian sari for a British Airways ad. Neelam lives in London and that’s not at all far in today’s connected world.
