All those guitar solos, licks, movements that used to drive us crazy were from the same instrument, Guitar! Every guitarist has many guitars, but there is only one which they adore or that’s special. Back in the 80’s, the scene was quite the same. Rockstars then had custom guitars made especially according to their needs. Some even made their own! Here is a list of some beauties!
1. Eric Clapton
Sir Eric Clapton bought six Fender Stratocasters from a local store and distributed three among his friends and then used the best components of the remaining three to form his own guitar! He called the guitar “Blackie” and played it on 13 albums for 15 years.
2. B.B. King
Sir B.B. King named his guitar “Lucille”. The story goes back to 1940’s when he was playing live and a fire broke out. He ran out to save himself leaving his guitar on the stage, but love can’t keep lovers away. He ran back inside and got it. The next day he got to know that the reason why the fire broke out was because of 2 men fighting over a woman named “Lucille”.
3. Jimi Hendrix
The guitar solos that people are trying to copy even today were by Jimi Hendrix. He was also known for starting a fire on his guitar! He is remembered for playing reverse-strung, right-handed guitar, left-handed.
4. Brian May
Brian May’s guitar was called “Red Special”. 40 Years ago, he and his dad started making an electric guitar from scratch because they couldn’t afford a proper guitar. It took 2 years to be completed and used pieces from fireplace mantle, motorbike stand and his mother knitting needles. The tone you hear on We will rock you and Bohemian rhapsody is from the same guitar!
5. Eddie Van Halen
David Lee Roth said “Come back with a real guitar” to Eddie Van Halen. He tried a Les Paul which was too heavy and a Fender Stratocaster which sounded too thin, so he got the idea of combining both. He painted his guitar with bicycle paint and that guitar produced something called as “Brown Sound”. He lost the pick guard, and added a nonfunctional pickup near the neck, a Floyd Rose tremolo, school bus reflectors on the back and a smaller pick guard made out of a vinyl record.
